#HeForShe. You may have come across this hashtag on social media, in e-mails, and at ACR 2017. Have you ever wondered what it’s all about?

#HeForShe is a solidarity movement by the United Nations Women which promotes gender equality across all spectrums, including healthcare, education, politics, identity, violence, and work. As a result, this effort has now permeated into medicine with subspecialties such as surgery and radiology taking a stand and promoting gender equality at specialty society meetings and on social media.

I’m excited to announce that due to the incredibly successful campaign at ACR 2017, the #HeForShe initiative will again take place during the ACR annual meeting next month.heforshe6

At ACR 2018, we are expanding our #HeForShe efforts to include encouraging #radxy and #radxx radiologists to take selfies and post on social media using the hashtags #HeForShe and #ACR2018. This social media initiative will allow attendees to pledge their support and share stories about how the movement has impacted their lives.

The ACR and the Commission for Women and Diversity are committed to policies and programs that address the shortage of women and underrepresented minorities in the radiological profession. During the meeting, members of the Commission will serve as ambassadors, disseminating stickers, signs, and other materials to attendees.

We want to attract, train, and support radiology professionals who are responsive to the needs of each other and to the needs of our diverse patients. It starts by taking action right now to create a gender equal world. We will only move the needle on creating the diverse specialty our patients deserve if we are willing to dismantle the barriers that hold us back and walk boldly forward, together.
