Leading Radiology into the Future
A new campaign seeks funds to expand leadership education for imagers.
The changing climate of radiology was a central theme at this year's AMCLC.
To help imagers adapt to the challenges and become leaders in medicine, ACR CEO Harvey L. Neiman, MD, FACR, announced that on Sunday, May 5, a major fundraising campaign to help support leadership education for radiologists. The campaign, titled Leading Radiology into the Future, is designed to benefit the College's Radiology Leadership Institute (RLI) and was developed by the ACR Foundation.
"While the RLI is committed to providing radiologists with the superior leadership training they need, additional funding is needed to ensure the overall success of the program. I want to thank the ACR Foundation for developing this new initiative, which will make a big impact on the radiology profession as a whole," says Cynthia A. Sherry, MD, FACR, chair of the Commission on Leadership and Practice Development and the medical director of the RLI.
As of press time, donors had pledged more than $2.9 million, which is approximately 59 percent of the campaign's $5 million goal. The ACR has pledged $1.2 million to Leading Radiology into the Future to show its support and to build momentum for the campaign.
"The RLI needs resources in order to grow. We've been incredibly successful in our first year, but we want to expand our program to meet this demand. Several important projects have been identified that will ensure our lasting impact on generations of future leaders — like creating new courses, investing in technology, and offering scholarships to residents and fellows," explains Arl Van Moore Jr., MD, FACR, who, together with James H. Thrall, MD, FACR, is leading the campaign. GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt is serving as honorary campaign chair.
Gifts and pledges made to the campaign will support three key funding priorities for the RLI:
• Develop Programs: Create and license customized leadership programs and design RLI courses that utilize technology and innovative learning methods.
• Develop Technology: Invest in a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, develop an ACR leadership resource center and electronic library, and organize a private online radiology leadership community.
• Cultivate Leaders and Future Program Enhancements: Establish an endowment for educational grants and scholarships for residents and fellows.
"What we are able to raise through the Leading Radiology into the Future campaign will have a direct effect on what the RLI is able to accomplish. The College has invested significantly in the campaign and so have many of the College's leaders and industry partners. If we work together to support this vital program, our impact will be far greater," Thrall says.
