Speed Mentoring at ACR 2017
The ACR 2017 Speed Mentoring Session took place on Tuesday, May 23rd. Using the successful model employed by the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR), the collective members of the ACR Young Professional Section (YPS) and the AAWR organized a larger-scale mentoring session targeted toward all members of the ACR-YPS, ACR-RFS, and AAWR members-in-training (MIT) with the support of the Radiology Leadership Institute® (RLI). One hundred eight mentees were in attendance from all levels of training, including radiologists who have been in practice for decades. This dynamic session was filled with various topics throughout the spectrum, in the hopes that the short mentoring sessions would spur on-going dialogue between mentors and mentees all year round.
Speed mentoring topics provided by 20 radiology leaders included tips on radiology advocacy, work-life balance, leadership, mentoring, interviewing pearls, grant writing, contract negotiation, and conflict resolution.
As per feedback provided via post-meeting surveys, the speed mentoring session was a worthwhile session, and, therefore, will occur again next year, including more tailored mentoring based on radiology subspecialties. Additionally, the YPS Executive Committee currently is devising strategies for possible establishment of a longitudinal YPS Mentorship Network, initially targeting those who are transitioning from training to practice. Stay tuned for more information.
