Q: What advice do you have for future women leaders in radiology?

You can’t have it all. I’m guessing you’ve heard that before. Yet every day in the greater Washington, D.C., area, I’m surrounded by women who disprove this statement. They lead busy and satisfying lives at home while maintaining active careers in government, medicine, and law. Over time they take on leadership roles requiring more responsibility and offering opportunities for professional advancement and personal fulfillment.
I am fortunate to have received life-long mentoring from brilliant, thoughtful women. This began at an early age with my mother, an academic pediatrician, and continued with my female program directors during my residency and fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. It extends into my current position at the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, PC, where I have benefited tremendously from the words of wisdom shared by the esteemed speakers of its Women in Leadership Conferences.

A few words of advice:
• Gravitate towards happy, positive role models. Medicine is filled with them, so learn from them.
• Make sure the job you choose offers opportunities for leadership development, whether it’s an academic department, private practice group, or an integrated health care delivery system.
• Say yes to new responsibilities and leadership roles in your department and community, even when you are tempted to say no.
• Practice self-confidence, and minimize self-doubt. Once you attain a position of leadership, mentor and promote the career advancement and leadership skills of others.
You can have it all — just choose what your all is and make it happen.
