The ACR’s YPS BOC Position
An excellent leadership opportunity in the ACR
At the ACR annual meeting in May 2016, Resolution 42b was submitted and sponsored by the BOC and CSC, and was passed by the Council. This resolution was submitted in response to the ACR’s strategic plan to have a renewed focus on the ACR’s Young and Early Career Professional Section (YPS).
Results of a close analysis of the ACR’s membership numbers indicated that while the ACR had a vibrant Resident and Fellow Section (RFS), a decline occurred in the number of YPS members between graduation from a training program and within the early stages of their careers. These lost members did not rejoin the membership as they continued on throughout the various stages of their careers. A focus was placed on this newly-graduated membership segment with the development of a YPS section and resources, as well as the development of leadership opportunities within the ACR. Resolution 42b created a leadership position for a YPS member to sit on the BOC, the ACR’s executive body which implements programs and initiatives to adhere to the goals of the organization. The idea was not only to better engage the YPS section but to also foster the development of future ACR leaders.
Shortly after the passing of this resolution, I was asked to serve as the first YPS member on the BOC. As the first to fill this role, I essentially had a blank sheet of paper in front of me and was given the rare opportunity to help sculpt the expectations and responsibilities of this new position. My idea for this role was to not only serve as a representative of the YPS by providing input and feedback on initiatives and resource development to the BOC, but to also work on my own initiatives. As a representative of the YPS, I provided my perspective and opinions to the BOC on various initiatives discussed at meetings. I was also asked as a BOC member to serve on various committees and work groups. An example of a work group I served on was one that was set up to evaluate numbers and statistics pertaining to the recent ACR annual meeting format change. We compiled data to present to the BOC to discuss whether we should continue the new format, return to the previous format or perhaps form a hybrid between the two. In terms of developing my own initiatives, I wanted to focus on retaining YPS members, specifically working with the Membership Commission. I worked under ACR President and Chair of the Membership Commission Bibb Allen Jr., MD, FACR, as vice chair of the Commission. I was specifically asked to evaluate the retention of members to determine why we are struggling in this area with some groups and what we can do about it. I assembled a great group of radiologists not only representing the YPS, but also mid-career professionals and subspecialists. Our committee had several brainstorming sessions throughout the year and we spent a great deal of time discussing how to reach out to non-members and what resources we could provide to retain our current members. One of the ideas that came out of our discussions was obtaining the complete list of radiologists from the ABR and comparing to our membership list. We were able to obtain this list to help us figure out who wasn’t a member and develop ways to reach out to them in the future. I also worked on a survey which I sent out to YPS members who weren’t members of the ACR to find out why they were not members and what we could do to reinstate them as members.
